Fondazione Gianni Benzi took part in the 40th National Congress of the Italian Society of Pharmacology (SIF) “Il valore scientifico e l’uso appropriato del farmaco”, which was held virtually from 9th to 13th March 2021.
The congress provided an opportunity to deepen understanding and share knowledge in the field of pharmacology, which was experiencing a significant and transformative period. Pharmacology played a central role through new research methodologies, advanced therapies (e.g., gene and cell therapies), the application of Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and personalised medicine—covering the entire research process from preclinical to translational and clinical research.
Our researcher and Head of the Research Department, Viviana Giannuzzi, was actively involved in SIF activities as a member of the working group (WG) on paediatric pharmacology. During the 40th SIF National Congress, she co-chaired and introduced a round table on therapeutic needs in paediatric pharmacology and the role of pharmacology in addressing these unmet needs. Additional insights into paediatric medicines for cancer and rare diseases were shared in an interview (available only in Italian) on paediatric pharmacology. In particular, Viviana highlighted key regulatory aspects of paediatric medicine development in Europe.
Annalisa Landi, a researcher at Fondazione Benzi and member of WG3 of the European Network of Centres for Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacovigilance (ENCePP), presented an analysis of Post-Authorisation Studies in the paediatric population based on data from the European Union electronic Register of Post-Authorisation Studies (EU-PAS).
A focus on paediatric drug repurposing in Europe within the framework of the Paediatric Regulation was presented by our researcher Maddalena Toma, who had recently published an in-depth analysis of paediatric medicines in Europe. Further details were made available.
Furthermore, Elisabetta Volpe, a researcher at Fondazione Benzi with active involvement in Data Science and the FAIRification process, provided insights into Data Interoperability in the context of the European Paediatric Translational Research Infrastructure (EPTRI).
