Warsaw (Poland) hosted the winter school of the SMART Project – Small Medicines Advanced Research Training, the EU project funded by the H2020 programme and aimed at enhancing knowledge and exchanging expertise on paediatric studies, including ethics, methodology, and innovative research.

The first day (March 12) of the winter school was organised as an open session, where various speakers discussed paediatric regulations, clinical trials and data protection, research, and pharmacovigilance. During this session, a speech was given by Prof. Adriana Ceci, President of the Gianni Benzi Foundation and member of the SMART project’s Scientific Coordination Group, on the future of biomedical paediatric research in Europe.

March 13 and 14 were dedicated to training sessions, the outcomes of which were presented in three breakout sessions focused on paediatric clinical trials, PK/PD model extrapolation, and paediatric formulations.

The SMART project represented a model of replicable and exportable collaboration, in which research, innovative enterprises, and public administration contributed to designing an intelligent, sustainable, and supportive development strategy for paediatric drug development. It engaged international experts from University College London and the University of Marseille.
