8 May is the World Thalassaemia Day, a major opportunity to raise public awareness about this blood disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. Thalassaemia is a type of haemoglobinopathy, a genetic condition that impairs the production of haemoglobin – the protein in red blood cells responsible for transporting oxygen. This condition can lead to chronic anaemia and complications that often require medical care, including regular blood transfusions and supportive therapies.

Fondazione Gianni Benzi has long been committed to scientific research and clinical innovation to improve the quality of life for patients with haemoglobinopathies, particularly thalassaemia and sickle cell disease. The Foundation is actively involved in international projects and networks focused on rare haemoglobinopathies, with special attention to paediatric patients. HELIOS and HEMAFAIR projects and the INHERENT network aim to enhance the management and research of haemoglobinopathies on a global scale. These collaborations support the adoption of shared standards in clinical research and the development of digital platforms for the study of haemoglobinopathies, including thalassaemia.

Equally crucial is our work in patient engagement: through educational and awareness-raising activities, the Foundation ensures the dissemination of accurate and accessible information, fosters collaboration with advocacy groups, and promotes the central role of patients in the research process.
