International Thalassaemia Day 2026

May 5, 2026

May 8 is International Thalassaemia Day.
Thalassaemia is one of the most common inherited disorders worldwide, with a significant clinical and healthcare impact, yet it is classified as a rare disease.

Even today, it remains poorly understood and is often surrounded by misconceptions and misinformation. However, access to accurate information should not be rare: initiatives such as FGB Pills were created precisely to make complex topics related to health, research, and rare diseases more accessible, helping to foster greater awareness.

Over the past decades, advances in medicine and research have profoundly changed the natural history of the disease, significantly improving both life expectancy and quality of life for patients.

International Thalassaemia Day is an important opportunity to raise awareness about the condition, highlight the importance of early diagnosis and screening, and emphasise the role of research in developing new therapeutic options.

On this occasion, Fondazione Gianni Benzi has developed a series of short informational contents, available on the dedicated International Thalassemia Day landing page, designed to explain in a simple and accessible way, what it means to live with this condition.

From understanding disease to daily life, from research to new therapies, to the role of patients and global challenges: a step-by-step journey designed to inform, raise awareness, and help overcome misconceptions and stigma.

Because knowledge is the first step toward understanding. And understanding is the first step toward making a difference!
