19 June is World Sickle Cell Day each year, providing a key opportunity to raise awareness of the impact of this genetic blood disorder, which affects millions of people worldwide, primarily those of African, Asian and Mediterranean descent.
Sickle cell disease is a form of haemoglobinopathy caused by the presence of abnormal haemoglobin, which alters the shape of red blood cells, making them resemble a sickle. These misshapen cells tend to stick together, obstructing blood flow and leading to painful crises, chronic anaemia, and damage to vital organs.
Fondazione Gianni Benzi has long been engaged in the research about this condition through scientific projects and international collaborations. In particular, the ARISE, ERAMET, HELIOS, HemaFAIR, and INHERENT projects are concrete examples of the Foundation’s commitment to improving knowledge, diagnosis, and clinical management of sickle cell disease.
To celebrate this day, we would like to share with you the informative booklet “Living well with sickle cell disease” produced by the ARISE project. It provides clear and accessible content on SCD for patients, and their families. The booklet is available free of charge on the official ARISE project website.
Through these initiatives, the Foundation also promotes education, awareness, and advocacy activities, supporting a patient-centred approach and the right to quality care, regardless of geographical or socioeconomic background.
