One of the areas of interest of Fondazione Gianni Benzi onlus, in which it is deeply involved, is the field of the haemoglobinopathies. As a matter of fact, many projects and papers, carried out by the Foundation, have been focused on this topic.

The Myocardial Iron Overload in Thalassemia (MIOT) project is the only experience in Europe that fosters and supports the use of magnetic resonance as the most efficient technique to monitor the myocardial iron overload in thalassaemic patients. Thanks to the MIOT activities, the level of care of thalassaemic patients in Italy has increased.

The participation of Professor Adriana Ceci in the XIV MIOT meeting, held on the 14-15 November 2019 in Ancona, can be considered a crucial opportunity to increase and exchange useful knowledge in this framework thanks to an interactive discussion on the current ways of thinking and the new innovative therapeutic approaches.

Professor Ceci presented a speech on the efficacy and safety data of Deferiprone. Deferiprone is one of the oral chelators currently available on the market. In particular, the presentation reported the results from a collaborative work that collected data from more than a thousand paediatric patients with haemoglobinopathies. The study confirms the safely use of chelators in paediatric population.
