The jury of the Journalists against Doping Award organized by the Gianni Benzi Foundation, under the patronage of the National Federation of the Italian Press and the National Commission for Doping Supervision, decided to award ex-aequo to Eugenio Capodacqua for the Press article "Flebo, ormoni e insulina, la farmacia nera del fai da te", published on July 22, 2008 in the newspaper La Repubblica and to Roberto Fusco for the series of television reports including analysis and debates on doping conducted during the various episodes of Processo alla Tappa (Rai 3) in the 2008 edition.
These are the motivations of the jury.
Prize for printed article to dr. Eugenio Capodacqua "for having, in the period under review and in many previous years, spent, with increasing competence, with passion and great courage, to present to readers the different aspects and tremendous risks of the progressive spread of doping in the various sports specialties. In particular, in the course of its activity, Capodacqua has analyzed and often criticized the delays and ambiguities with which the appointed institutions have conducted the fight against doping, realizing timely information with respect to the many implications that have emerged from the main judicial investigations. Due to the limited space and the impossibility of dealing with such complex and controversial topics on its own newspaper, Eugenio Capodacqua has also had the brilliant idea to realize - before any other - its own specialized website (http://www.sportpro.it) thanks to which he has developed a vast and constantly updated information and documentation, and which has become an indispensable tool and reference for insiders and an increasing number of visitors'.
Prize for television reports to Roberto Fusco 'for producing a series of analysis and reports on doping and, subsequently, for having constantly and promptly followed up this commitment with commentary services on the most relevant events that have taken place in the last few years. In the role of conductor of Processo alla Tappa, the historical transmission inaugurated by Sergio Zavoli and that Rai - Radiotelevisione Italiana continues to propose during the Giro d'Italia, he has had the merit of proposing on several occasions analyzes and debates on doping, wide-ranging and not limited to the problem in cycling'.
The jury, chaired by Senator Mariapia Garavaglia, was composed of Sergio Rizzo (deputy director of Corriere dello Sport), Giuseppe Toti (journalist of Corriere della Sera), Sandro Donati (sports teacher and anti-doping expert), Pasquale Bellotti (doctor), Felice Salvati (representative of the National Federation of the Italian Press) and Luigia Trabace (representative of the National Commission for Doping Supervision).
