Two new reports highlight how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping healthcare and medicine development across Europe, offering major opportunities but also raising key challenges.

The Study on the Deployment of AI in Healthcare (Final Report) finds that European health systems face increasing demand for healthcare services due to aging populations, workforce shortages, diagnostic and treatment inefficiencies, and disparities in access to care. AI is seen as a promising tool to address these challenges and to transform the healthcare sector. The study aims to provide recommendations to support responsible AI adoption, taking inspiration from all EU 27 Member States and relevant third countries where the deployment of AI in healthcare is advanced, such as the USA, Israel and Japan.

The Review of AI/ML Applications in the Medicines Lifecycle (2024) explores how AI and Machine Learning are driving innovation at every stage of drug development and lifecycle. While AI offers faster and more effective development of new medicines, the report warns of challenges related to data privacy, regulatory adaptation, and unequal access to AI technologies between academia and industry.

Both reports conclude that AI could transform healthcare delivery and medical innovation, but achieving its full potential will require investment, ethical governance, and equitable access to technology.
