Fondazione Gianni Benzi is partner of the 7th European Association of Health Law (EAHL) Conference“Innovation & Healthcare – New challenges for Europe”, under the patronage of the Council of Europe. In this context, the Foundation organises the workshop “Innovative medicine and research: ethical, legal and regulatory issues”.
The EAHL Conference, which took place in Toulouse from 25 to 27 September at Hôtel Dieu St Jacques, discussed the appropriate legal, ethical, and regulatory frameworks within which innovative medicine, access to healthcare and innovation, e-health and data protection, intellectual property, and patient empowerment and involvement in innovative healthcare must be addressed in order to ensure the highest societal interest and the protection of human rights. To this end, during the conference, the Council of Europe also held a workshop on the application of human rights principles in biomedicine and bioethics.
According to the 2010 European Research Agenda, healthcare innovation was to be assessed not only from a scientific perspective, but also in the broader context in which clinical benefits, improvements in economic and health outcomes, and respect for patients’ rights are demonstrable and appropriately rewarded. The use of digital health information, medical records, personal data, and ICT also raised important questions regarding their further use, particularly in research, and how such use should be regulated.
Thus, it was recognised that guidance and regulation must be continuously updated and adapted to support the development of innovative clinical solutions and increasingly complex therapies.
Fondazione Gianni Benzi Workshop addressed the theme of innovative medicine and research, including Advanced Therapies, the use of machine learning in health data management, access policies, translational research, and vulnerable populations. The workshop was coordinated by Annagrazia Altavilla, EAHL Board representative and member of the Benzi Foundation Scientific Committee, and was organised as the XII Foresight Training Course.
